Minimally Invasive Orthopaedic Procedures
Conservative Treatments for Joint Pain in Acarida & LA County
At USC Arcadia Hospital, orthopaedic services are about helping people achieve the highest level of function with as little pain as possible. We understand that most people want to avoid surgery if they can, and while an operation can be an effective solution, we prioritize more conservative measures and only recommend open surgery when other means prove insufficient.
Many orthopaedic conditions can be successfully treated with medication and physical therapy. In some cases, even intense pain will go away on its own over time and all a patient requires is relief in the interim.
Some conservative measures that can help with orthopaedic conditions including:
- Weight loss
- Joint protectors, such as canes and splints
- Medications designed to control pain and inflammation
- Massage
- Physical therapy
Arthroscopic Surgery
Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive orthopaedic surgery used to treat joint damage and pain. Minimally invasive procedures are operations that only involve small incisions and allow for faster recovery-many even allow the patient to return home the same day of the surgery. In an arthroscopic procedure, the surgeon only needs to make a small incision near the affected joint and operate on the area using small instruments.
These operations are performed using an arthroscope, a small, tube-shaped camera that is inserted in the area and displays the joint muscle and ligaments on a monitor. Using this live feed as a guide, the surgeon can perform the operation without cutting the area completely open.
Arthroscopic surgery is frequently used to treat:
- Shoulder pain
- Muscle tears
- Knee pain
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Cartilage damage
Arthroscopy is a preferred treatment method by most orthopedists. It is especially useful in sports medicine as it allows the athlete to return to the field faster than going through physical therapy or recovering from open surgery.
Be aware that while recovery is shorter, you should not instantly jump back into regular activity after arthroscopic surgery. Let the area heal for a few weeks as you ease it back into normal activities.
