WHAT IS LYMPHEDEMA?

Lymphedema is a disease condition where there is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the body’s tissues. It usually affects one arm or leg, but may develop in both limbs, breast, face, neck, trunk, pelvis and genital area. If not treated, it can lead to hardening of skin, chronic inflammation, poor wound healing and susceptibility to infections.

What are the symptoms of lymphedema?

The usual signs and symptoms include:

• swelling
• heaviness
• tightness
• discomfort
• skin changes such as dry skin, discoloration

Who is at risk for developing lymphedema?

People who are at risk for developing lymphedema are those

with:

• History of cancer (e.g. breast, cervical, colorectal, sarcoma, lymphoma etc)
• History of mastectomy or lumpectomy
• History of tumor resection or other traumatic surgery
• History of radiation
• History of Chronic Venous Insufficiency (circulation problems)
• Congenital Lymphedema
